Wild Speculation #16: Wynonna Earp Season 1 Episode 4, The Blade

So in between watching the last episode and starting this one I had a sudden thought: Stone Witch is probably Wynonna's Mom. Yep. That was my wild speculation.

Of course now, after having watched the episode, I realize it's got to be the woman who “made me what I am”— the woman who made Doc immortal. He seems to want to find her to... what? Reverse this? Make it so he can die again?

Because he specified that a bullet and a couple other methods could end him, so if he wants to die, he could manage to arrange to go out in a blaze of glory and ice cream.

I do think it's interesting that the schism between Wyatt and Doc has been portrayed as being because of Doc's eternal life deal. I can't help but wonder if it's that simple, if there's going to be a surprising twist to this revealed later in the season.

Also: dark gifts never come without a price. What price did Doc Holliday pay in order to escape the death his TB was working so industriously towards?

One final thought before I take my leave:

Wild Speculation #15: Beauty and the Beast (2012-2016) Season 1 Episode 14, Tough Love

This episode was rather uncomfortable for me. I love Tess and Cat's relationship and I also love the relationship between Heather and Cat. Seeing them so strained is a bit painful, though I have hopes both will end up resolved. Probably only after both women being lied to end up in the know. Late this season, or next season possibly?

Okay. Evan gave the subtle signals that should be warning flags for Been Approached By Muirfield. It would have been hard to say it louder. He said he'd been given “an offer.” He spoke to Cat about it, which is big, considering he knows she's been lying to him all along, and it's his life she's lying to him about. That's a big gesture of goodwill/faith, and it has all the hallmarks of being the last one.

While I love Cat, and I understand she was terrified about her sister, she displayed a remarkable case of tunnel vision, and everyone will suffer because of it. Including Heather. That's great you kept her from choking to death, but since you refused to pay attention to the oncoming train, it only staves off death five seconds. Congratulations, Darling, I'm so proud of you. You're concern for your sister's safety does you credit.

What Heather needed in that moment was not a panicker. She needed someone able to take on the immediate sword fight and notice the bomber coming in low to drop death down on their heads. Cat wasn't prioritizing, she was narrowing her sphere of responsibility to the point where she— and everyone else— will be hit broadside by something they had no excuse for not seeing coming.

Now Even is not brought in, and the Captain's baby brother is dead. Cat, by her refusal to make the best of a situation out of control, and by getting ahead of the fire perhaps direct it, has now practically driven Evan into Muirfield's arms. What other choice has she really given him?

And in the meantime, we get to experience the up-down-up-down of Cat and Vincent's relationship which has been a key theme of this season. They decide yes, ten seconds later it's no again, back and forth. I'm confident that won't change for a good long while yet, end of this season, or, Force forbid, the end of the final season. Please no.

Ah, well, I suppose this falls squarely in the category of Supernatural Romance. Only... it's sci-fi. He's a werewolf, but without the moon.

Okay. I'm not done whining about the Evan situation. Feel free to close out this window now, since I know I'm going to be unreasonable.

“I am scared for you, Cat.” He's a cop and a decent person, and there's a potentially innocent man lying dead on his table, and Cat says trust me, you don't have to be. I will give you, O Reader, twenty seconds to decide if that's a good play. I love Cat. Just an episode or so ago she was raving about Alex not playing smart, but here she's refusing to listen to her own (very good) advice.

As for what I really, really liked— the comment that having a brother taken makes you do crazy things...

Like enlist? JT asks. Like say yes to those crazy experiments, Vincent replies.

I am changing my speculation from before. I no longer think JT is his brother, but I think Vincent did have one or more brothers, and that something bad happened to one or more. In fact, I'm going to narrow it down: my insane speculation is as follows.

Vincent has two siblings. One, a brother, died. It sent the other two in different, but both harmful, ways. Vincent into the crazy experiment, and the other sibling, into something much darker. Perhaps a life of crime, or to be a hitperson, or something, and that particular sibling will be an antagonist later on in the series. Maybe not this season, but season 2 or 3.

And one more thing, because I forgot to earlier— I'm torn between thinking Alex is quite dead, or a hostage of Muirfield. No brain matter, so she could always show up again... but I think it would be rather eloquent for her to be dead with none of our heroes knowing about it.

Wild Speculation #14: Beauty and the Beast (2012-2016) Season 1 Episode 13, Trust No One

Evan is definitely realizing something is going on.

While I'm sorry to see the relationship between Cat and Tess strained since I really like their partnership, I have to give a nod of respect to Tess because she was smart to get out of there quick. Very smart.

Evan also played a smart game this episode. The trap was amusing, and he didn't fall into the Good Guy Blindspot— you know, the thing where once a hero has slept with a threat they cannot fathom that threat could be a threat. I cheered Evan on for that point alone.

On the subject of Valentine's Day angst, I found this episode very interesting. Let me preface this by saying that while I am asexual, I am 96.3% sure that I am not aromantic. In spite of that, I've never actually experienced Valentine's Day blues, even though quite often I don't have a Valentine for them.

Because that feeling of incompleteness tied to this particular day has never been something I've felt, I'm very curious about how it functions. Does it feel just as terrible the day before and the day after, or is it just the day of? Does finding a casual date allay the problem?

Anyway. I'm glad Evan is no longer with I Climbed Mount Everest, because if our heroine must be in a relationship with someone, I want it to be Evan. Even though I'm very, very sure that will not be the endgame for this show.

Wild Speculation #13: Wynonna Earp Season 1 Episode 3, Leavin' On Your Mind

“I want them to tremble with fear before me!” — Wynonna

“...You've got powdered sugar on your nose.” — Dolls

Yes. Oh, yes. I loved that scene, and rather enjoyed the entire episode.

Some wild speculations: Stone Witch is going to be massively important. Stone Witch is either Haught or Wynonna's Crabby Aunt.

During the episode I thought for sure that the dull knife would be important. After all, Wynonna's comment of, how dull is that knife leaped out at me. But apparently it had little significance outside of making that particular scene more grisly.

Also: Mister My Skull Vibrates? Why does he do that every single time? Does he enjoy feeling dizzy? Is he trying to scare people? Or is he about ready to shiver into a thousand pieces?

In the cemetery, Wynonna had a clear shot. Did she take it? No. She had to stand there and talk. Gloat. Come on, I like you, Wynonna, don't do things like that! You're smarter than this!

My guess when Dolls “caressed” Wynonna's ear was that he'd put an earbud in. Does that prove I've watched Leverage too many times? I was wrong, it turned out to be a tracker, but it was quick thinking on Dolls' part and I liked it.

“I'm all the backup she needs.” Damn. I loved that moment even though I'm not sure whether I like Dolls anymore or not. I usually like the grim soldier/cop types, but Dolls has been intentionally baiting Wynonna, and that kind of petty bickering in real life would cause mistakes. We'll see. I still love his name, and the fact that he can wear it without flinching.

Doc Holliday. Well, well, well. Good to see you, John Henry. Wild speculation: one of these days the good doctor is going to be the key to saving the day. There is no doubt in my mind that will take place.

Wild Speculation #12: Beauty and the Beast (2012-2016) Season 1 Episode 12, Cold Turkey

“No tragic loss of life in a morgue.” I am very hopeful that we will begin to have some more unraveling of Evan's backstory. There remains much to be revealed in spite of the work put into it in this episode.

I confess that JT's strategy for convincing Evan to not talk about his findings annoyed me. He led with Secret, Murky Organization while providing no details or evidence, then followed it up by threatening a cop.

Just how much time did he invest in trying to determine if such a strategy would have even a glimmer of a chance of working? I'm guessing less than thirty seconds. And given the fact he had to spend time hacking in order to find blackmail material, he had time to think about it.

We've seen this in Cat in the past, too. Evan's personality type is surprisingly earnest, given the affect he tried to give off in the early episodes. And he's a cop. And he was almost murdered in a horrible way by a serial killer... and saved by a creature. Is there any way in hell he's going to just back down because Cat asked him to while giving him no reason to do so? And yet she assumes he will, is annoyed when he doesn't, and worst of all, is surprised when he doesn't.

Back to this fiasco. Not only did JT not manage to stop Evan's determination, but he also burned bridges so that Evan would not be interested in communicating with JT anymore, and definitely not interested in trusting him. To be honest, JT would have done less damage if he'd stayed out of the whole thing entirely.

On the other hand, clever, clever Evan. The more I see him, the more I like him.

At the end, when Cat announced, “And now I need to be there for someone who's always been there for me,” I nearly cheered. That felt so right and good, to have her head out to back Tess up when her partner does need her. I really do like Cat, even if some of her decisions baffle and annoy me. She has a kind, loyal heart, she is brave and smart a good chunk of the time, and I always love her hand-to-hand fights with perps.

Wild Speculation #11: Beauty and the Beast (2012-2016) Season 1 Episode 11, On Thin Ice

We're back to the “something went wrong” intro speech. It's a bit shorter than the original one, but I confess I prefer the openings we had for a couple episodes over this particular intro.

“Leave a message and if I don't get back to you it's probably because I don't really like you.”

What a wonderful answering machine message!

Some very heavy conversations took place in this episode. I think the concept that stuck out at me most was when Cat told Vincent, you haven't told her yet [about his current condition and the threat to his life] and until you do isn't all this just a fantasy?

In so many stories we see characters who have relationships built on carefully-structured falsehoods. Those falsehoods always end up slipping, the other finds out, and the apparently idyllic relationship either shatters or ends up very strained.

Too often characters respond by it was all okay; the problem is the other found out as opposed to seeing the Fake Person as being the source of the problem. Cat's way of looking at it was very interesting to me. Until you're fully honest with your significant other, is that relationship even real, or is it just an elaborate roleplay?

An interesting thought to ponder.

Wild Speculation #10: Wynonna Earp Season 1 Episode 2, Keep the Home Fires Burning

This episode had some wonderful quotes.

Wynonna trying to clear the club out with her credentials, giving up, and finally yelling, “Crazy chick with a gun!” And when threatened that she would be taken out by the revenants (“we”), she replied, “We? Maybe. You? Doesn't look great,” right before taking him out for good. Other lines I really liked: “We do not take pirate booty,” and “Wyatt didn't drink. He preferred ice cream.”

Also: Wynonna doesn't like pink. I like that in a woman. All joking aside, that made me laugh.

The crater town was something else. And while Dolls' backstory will be revealed later no doubt, we received a couple of hints here. That he tried to prevent the Woke Town going boom— “I did everything I could to stop it.” I love the comment Wynonna made to him after he showed her that photo of the destroyed town. “Normal dudes carry baby pictures in their wallet.” Nice.

Dolls made a comment about it being difficult to be the youngest, which makes me wonder if he's the youngest in his family. I look forward to the further revealing of his past. He also laid out the statement: “I don't do relationships” to Wynonna. Calling it now, these two end up in one together.

Speaking of pasts, our Well Man, Henry, had quite a lot of hints dropped. We know who you are, who you rode with. What he did to their great great granddaddy. “You were Wyatt Earp's right hand man.” Still human, with mortal blood to purchase the assassin's work, “I can do it, Henry. I can give you the woman who changed you,” and his panicked, “I won't go back in the dark!” I am very curious for the continued unraveling of his backstory.

I confess I was quite confident that the “Imaginary friend” would be important the moment Waverly brought it up. I was right. However, once Bobo appeared in the flashback, I was absolutely, completely convinced it would turn out to be our Man of the Well.

Turns out it's the walking add for Vikings instead! Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks Bossman is in the wrong TV show? And then it turned into Star Trek because the guy peeled his shirt off so we could see his glowing back? I get why they did that for the audience, but I'm having a hard time figuring out why in-universe the Viking cosplayer named Bobo is slowly stripping. No, wait, I think the answer's in the question.

There were some classic horror elements in the story: none of the lights working, can't get them back on. Fresh batteries in the flashlight. The car won't start. When Wynonna insisted on splitting up, I yelped, “Seriously?!” because I thought she was a smarter woman than that, but apparently not. Waverly's question later, “Where is this thing?”

It's behind you, sweetheart. It's always behind you.

Some final thoughts: interesting that revenants get burned by Peacemaker when they touch her. Why isn't Waverly's height marked on the wall? Is she not the child of one or other parent? Or does she not exist? Is she all in Wynonna's head, or perhaps she does exist, but is a ghost?

And best for last: Nicole Haught. It's really too bad she's almost definitely a revenant. Really too bad, because I really like her.
